The Ballot or the Bullet - Malcolm X Speech

1) List at least one example of the following: Malcolm's use of ethos, logos, pathos.
Ethos- His opening remarks relate to the audience
Logos- Talking about the other Nations 
Pathos- He brings up slavery. "Crackers" = White People 

2) What is the purpose of the speech?  How does Malcolm obtain that purpose?
To get people to understand what is going on, and they have power, if they cast their vote in the right direction. 

3) Who is his audience?  How do you know this?
The black people of America. 
He is speaking to them to let them know they have power. He wouldn't say some of the things he says if "crackers" were around. 

4) List at least one example of the following types of proof:
a) analogy/narration to back up his main idea
Kennedy and Khrushchev. They can get along so african americans and white people should be able to get along.
b) statistics
In the senate there are 67 senators who are democrats and only 33 republicans. 

c) facts

d) expert witnesses

5) Does he have refutation of the opposing side?  If so, what is it?
The korean war. It could end in a war. 

6) List so structural devices and discuss their effect:

a) parallelism
A lot of his speech is made up of parallelism. 


b) short sentences
"The ballot or the bullet"
c.long sentences (types of long sentences)
Doesn't have very many. He wants to keep everyones attention. 


7) What other things does Malcolm X use for effect?
Scare tactics. He tries to scare the "crackers."
