News Article 4

http://news.firedoglake.com/2012/09/17/occupy-wall-street-begins-new-organizing-campaign-as-strike-debt-launches/

Occupy Wall Street has just begun its second round. People are standing on wall street, protesting against the banks. One protester said, "We gave the banks the power to create money because they promised to use it to help us live healthier and more prosperous lives—not to turn us into frightened peons. They broke that promise. We are under no moral obligation to keep our promises to liars and thieves. In fact, we are morally obligated to find a way to stop this system rather than continuing to perpetuate it."
I think that what these people are doing isn't going to help solve our problems. It didn't last year, and I don't think it will this year. They are only making the government and banks more angry. Im sure that these protests are doing something, but I don't think them standing out there yelling is going to change anything. I do think that we do have the right to try and stop, or help out the system.

"Why I Went Into The Woods" Group Precis

In chapter two of Henry David Thoreau's 1854 book Walden, he claims that life should be lived in more of a simple manner asking, "Why should we live with such hurry and waste of life?" (3) The author says "Men think that it is essential that the Nation have commerce, and export ice, and talk through a telegraph, and ride thirty miles an hour, without a doubt, whether they do or not, but whether we should live like baboons or like men is a little uncertain." (2) reinforcing his thesis that we require very little to fulfill our lives. Thoreau details this in order to connect with nature, sharing the simplicity of the world around us, while still finding time to value and appreciate the journey of life and all it has to offer. With a literal tone, the author hopes to connect with the American people, to persuade them that there are better, worthier outlooks on life.

Chapter 3 Notes

Synthesizing Sources: Entering the Conversation
o   Types of Supports
           Anecdote
A brief story that illustrates a point you are making
Facts
Information that is verifiable through general sources
 Encyclopedia
 History book
 Biographical dictionary
             Quantitative Data
             Statistical information
             More than just numbers
Give credit to- the sources where you find this information
              Expert Testimony
You could quote the expert directly or put his/her points in your own words by summarizing or paraphrasing them
Citing anecdotes, facts, statistics and experts is one way to appeal to logos
Documenting such information establishes your ethos
o   Writers at Work
Don’t let other writer’s points of view effect your own.
What you have to say is the main event, your position is central
o   The Relationship of Sources to Audience
Make sure you know whom your audience is!
A general audience
       Casual readers
The audience will expect a more formal approach for something written for a literary magazine for writers
Scholars and Researchers
The type of evidence and the way it is documented depends on audience and situation
o   The Synthesis Essay
Requires you to use outside sources, sources that have been assigned to you, or sources that are part of your classroom readings
Your goal is the same as that of the more experienced writers
Use sources to support and illustrate your own ideas and to establish your credibility as a member of the academic community that values the “conversation” created by different voices
Citing your sources
     Informal in-text citations
      Formal in-text parenthetical documentation
      End-of-paper Works Cited List
o   MLA
You MUST document sources to give credit where credit is due
o   Identifying the Issues: Recgnizing Complexity
A compelling argument leaves the reader thinking, questioning, considering, and reconsidering
A reasonable voice is usually a qualified one
One that is both challenged and informed by others
Anticipate objections to your position and recognize and respect the complexities of your topic
Recognize there are more than two sides to an issue
o   Formulaing Your Position
Before formulating you position, take stock of the issues
Ask yourself questions to make sure you understand the writing and to help form your ideas for your argument
With these questions formulated in your mind you can now form a thesis
o   Incorporating Sources: Inform Rather than Overwhelm
Don’t simply summarize or paraphrase a series of texts, but rather cite your sources
By paraphrasing or quoting directly
You’re in charge of the sources

http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/us/2012/09/01/early-dnt-teacher-and-students-bully-kid-kiro.cnn

A teacher at Kopachuck middle school was video'd on a cell phone by a student bullying and helping other kids bully a 13 year old boy. The teacher poked him, put his butt in the boys face and said he felt gassy, held a pillow in his face so he couldn't breath, and stuck the students own socks in his mouth. As soon as the school found out the placed the teacher on leave for a 10 day suspension. They re-evaluated him, then put him on the sub list. And then for the next fall moved hime to another middle school. The student that was bullied was not able to go back to school, so he changed schools and is in therapy. The teacher apologized after but said it was just harmless childhood fun.
The sheriff weren't called right away when the school found out about it. This happened in february and the case is still being looked at. This teacher should've been put to jail. Or at least not let back in any school any where and be able to teach. The school thought they did the right think by putting him on a 10 day suspension, and made a substitute teacher. If I were the students parents I would sue the teacher and the school.

A Modest Proposal

In Jonathan Swifts, "A Modests Proposal" (1729), Swifts persona offers a solution to overpopulation  in Ireland by selling the poor children to meat markets, to be killed and sold to the rich. The speaker argues that, "..instead of being a charge upon their parents...they shall on the contrary contribute to the feeding, and partly clothing, of many thousands." Swift proves with data that, "...the maintenance of a an hundred thousand children from two years old and upwards, cannot be computed at less than ten shillings a piece per annum, the nation's stock will thereby increased fifty thousand pounds per annum..." The Author is trying to say that by doing this, it will be creating jobs for women. In this satirical essay, the author hopes to call the attention to his own people, the Irish, and tell them to become better people and promote a change of in themselves. The Irish are being taken advantage of and are not coming together to help the problem. Nothing is going to get better unless they do something about it.

http://news.yahoo.com/navy-seal-bin-laden-book-selling-50-shades-175008251--finance.html

A former U.S. Navy SEAL wrote the book, "No Easy Day," about the raid that killed Osama bin Laden. This book has caused a lot of controversy. The government has threatened to take legal action against Mark Owen, who's real name is Matt Bissonnette, which was recealed a little after new broke out about the book being published. Matt has allegedly violated the non-discolsure agreements. But his publicist said that the book was not covered by the non-discolsure agreements he signed.

I believe that this book could bring on danger to the U.S. In his book he revealed all the secrets and the way the found Osama. It not only could give the "Alquida" group information, but help them get around the U.S. again. I think it is smart to punish him for publishing this book without proper consent.
