"To be a janitor at some downtown store was to be highly respected."
Then, being a "successful negro', was to be a waiter at a country club, a janitor at a downtown store. If you were rich, that probably meant you were a gambling house owner. Now it is completely different, to be a janitor at any establishment is a very low class job. This shows how African Americans were treated, and how they weren't able to get the same rights and job opportunities as the whites.
